Thursday, April 12, 2012 10:08 - A mid-morning fire in an upscale gated golf community left a 1.5 million dollar, 8000 sqft home in ruins. The call, initial dispatched as a fire alarm, was quickly upgraded when neighbors called 911 reporting heavy smoke and fire coming from the structure.
The home, located in the Salem Fire District was approximately 50% involved when the first Engine arrived on scene. Fire crews immediately established a water supply from a pressure hydrant located in the front yard. A water shuttle using several tankers was also established as a secondary water source.
An investigation by the Oconee County Fire Investigation Team, ATF, and the insurance company determined the fire started as a result of a power surge into the home.
The primary response department was Salem Fire & Rescue, assisted by the Keowee Fire, Picket Post, Keowee-Ebenezer, West Union, Walhalla and Vineyard Fire Departments. The SC Forest Service was also called to control several spot fires in the surrounding woods.
